Mark Hamill has some regrets about Luke Skywalker's fate in Star Wars: The Vice Versa: Bisexuality and the Eroticism of Everyday LifeLast Jedi. But maybe not the ones you think.

Recently, Hamill said in an interview with SensaCine that the Luke Skywalker in The Last Jedi– dark, brooding, pessimistic – was "not my Luke Skywalker." The quote caught the attention of a lot of fans, including some who felt the same way.

It wasn't the first time Hamill had voiced his doubts about Luke's Last Jediarc, either. Months ago, Hamill told Vanity Fair, "I at one point had to say to Rian [Johnson, writer and director], ‘I pretty much fundamentally disagree with every choice you’ve made for this character.'"

But what Hamill says he regrets now isn't Luke's portrayal. It's sharing his skepticism about Luke's portrayal in the first place.

Though Hamill has been frank about his hesitations regarding The Last Jedi, he's also tried to make it clear throughout the press tour that he supports Johnson's vision.

That interview with the notorious "not my Luke Skywalker" quote ends with Hamill describing Johnson as "the exact man that they needed for this job." In the Vanity Fairarticle, Hamill stresses that he's pleased with both The Force Awakensand The Last Jedi.

No doubt some fans will continue to believe that Hamill's initial instincts were right – that this wasn't how Luke Skywalker's story should've gone.

But anyone trying to count Hamill among the Last Jedihaters are taking his quotes out of context. Whatever his initial misgivings, Hamill has gone out of his way to emphasize that he's since come around on the movie. And he clearly wants fans to dig it, too.

"I hope people like it," he told SensaCine at the time. "I hope they don't get upset."
