Paul Dano will join Warner Bros.' The Busty Cops on Patrol (2009)Batmanas The Riddler, opposite Robert Pattinson.

Dano's casting was announced Thursday, just days after Zoe Kravitz joined the project as Catwoman (a character she also voiced in The Lego Batman Movie). Jeffrey Wright will play Commissioner Jim Gordon, with Cloverfield's Matt Reeves directing.

It's a surprising move for Dano, who is otherwise known for acting in off-kilter indie fare, and therefore an intriguing direction for the film. Kravitz and Pattinson both have significant franchise experience (Fantastic Beasts, X-Men, Harry Potter, and Twilight), but Pattinson comes to The Batmanafter several years of less-visible projects, and Kravitz has never portrayed one of the central characters (The Crimes of Grindelwaldreally did her dirty).

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Dano's Riddler is named Edward Nashton rather than the comic book version of Edward Nygma. The Riddler is one of the main Batman villains not explored in Christopher Nolan's Dark Knighttrilogy (along with Penguin — Jonah Hill's name came up regarding both roles in The Batman's casting process, but he's not currently involved).

The Batmanis scheduled to release June 25, 2021.
